What do teen slang and SEO/AEO/GEO algorithms have in common?
They both change faster than any sane adult can keep up.
Last May I won lottery tickets to see HBO 's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver after waiting YEARS to apply for tickets.
What took me so long? I had to wait for my daughter, who has been an ardent Last Week Tonight fan since her early teens, to turn 18.
At one point, Oliver and the audience tried to agree on the “current” version of “on fleek.”
Someone said “fire.” Someone else said “rizz.” Everyone laughed, and he basically admitted that staying current is a losing game.
That’s exactly how I view today’s ever-shifting SEO/AEO/GEO landscape. I track the trends, understand how they actually impact brand systems, and apply them when they matter. But most leaders don’t need to speak fluent slang or algorithm. They need clarity, consistency, and a brand built to adapt as things change.
This article, 'Social Media Slang Isn't For Everybody' made me think of that fun Last Week Tonight exchange: https://lnkd.in/g5HJyutz. Chasing every new term (or every new algorithm tweak) isn’t strategy. It’s exhaustion.
Oliver was resigned to the reality that trying to keep up with today’s slang is impossible.
While awareness of trends and how they may or may not be in service to your business is important; the article confirms that marketers shouldn't be worrying if they are using “drip” and “tough” correctly, they probably shouldn't be using them at all.
The same goes for SEO/AEO/GEO algorithms. They absolutely matter. They just move fast. I stay on top of the changes and apply what’s relevant in client projects, but most leaders don’t need to live in the weeds of every update. It’s usually enough to understand the direction and let specialists handle the constant churn underneath it.
If you want to chat about industry trends or commiserate on how uncool your kids think you are as you try to insert terms like "drip" and "tough" in your everyday exchanges with them, slide into my DMs. 😉
