What the Font?

Spotted in Rockefeller Center in the Fall of 2023 giant numbers as an installation of works by Robert Indiana, ONE Through ZERO (The Ten Numbers), ten 8-foot-tall Cor-Ten steel number sculptures.

Indiana used Clarendon, a bold, slab serif curvaceous typeface created in London in 1845 that was used for signage and in the U.S. for 'wanted' posters.

Clarendon was created by Robert Besley for the Fann Street Foundry in London and was originally engraved by punchcutter Benjamin Fox, who may also have contributed to its design.

It was the very first typeface to be patented but it was for only 3 years so quickly there were different versions created in the same style.
